What the WhatsApp Business API pricing model means for Indian businesses

If you send order updates to two thousand dealers, the way Meta charges for WhatsApp messaging determines whether that is a rounding error or a line item somebody questions. It is worth understanding properly rather than discovering at the end of a quarter.

Conversations versus messages

The older model charged for a twenty-four hour conversation window. Once a window opened, everything inside it was covered. The current direction of travel is per-message pricing for business-initiated templates, with messages inside a customer-initiated service window remaining free.

The practical consequence is that the businesses most affected are the ones sending many low-value notifications — dispatch updates, payment reminders, stock alerts. The businesses least affected are the ones having genuine conversations, because those largely happen inside the free service window.

What to do about it

Audit your templates. Most businesses running WhatsApp at scale have templates nobody has looked at in a year. Some fire on events that no longer matter. Some duplicate an SMS that also goes out.

Consolidate where the recipient does not need separate messages. Three notifications about one order is three charges and, usually, a worse experience than one.

Move conversation into the service window. If a customer replies, everything you send for the next twenty-four hours is covered. Designing your first message to invite a reply is both cheaper and better practice.

Watch your quality rating. Cost is not the only constraint. A falling quality rating reduces your messaging limits regardless of what you are willing to pay, and it falls fastest when you send messages people did not ask for.

The thing most people miss

Pricing changes periodically and will change again. Building your messaging so that template logic sits in your own system rather than hard-coded into a vendor’s dashboard means the next change is a configuration exercise rather than a migration.
